Last Man Standing – Jerry Lee Lewis | CD review

(Artists First/Shock) 5 stars

“Some folks say it’s too old/Some folks say it goes just a little too fast’’.

It’s almost as if Bruce Springsteen, in his classic rocker `Pink Cadillac’, was writing about Jerry Lee Lewis – especially when the Killer (now 71) and the Boss team up to sing it on this feisty, stellar get-together.

The guest roster on this duets project is packed with rock, blues and country icons such as B.B. King, Neil Young,  Buddy Guy, John Fogerty, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson,  a Beatle and several Rolling Stones.

It began in 2001 and has revived the health and career of the then ailing Lewis, which alone is a worthwhile achievement, but it’s also terrific fun, from the raucous opener with Jimmmy Page on `Rock and Roll’ to an evocative `Twilight’ with Robbie Robertson.

Jerry Lee is in total control throughout and that rollicking boogie piano is remarkably good.

The most telling moment is a piano duel with Little Richard on the Beatles’ `I Saw Her Standing There’ … completing the circle. And stick around for the CD’s final recitation by this great rock survivor.
